Over 180 ships have been equipped with different types of stabilizers

Anti-roll stabilizers

Folding fin anti-roll stabilizers (SAFIR)

  • 78 ships equipped including 15 with the new ALPHA FIN profile
  • Three are so large that 2 pairs of fins are necessary
  • Fin area ranges from 2.5 to 24 m2

Non-folding fin anti-roll stabilizers (SAFARI)

  • 33 ships equipped
  • Fin area ranges from 0.5 to 16.5 m2

Active tank anti-roll stabilizers (SARA)

  • 47 ships equipped, mainly minehunters, because these vessels require stabilization even when stopped

Different stabilizers have various features and scopes of application that determine whether they are suitable for a particular ship based on the vessel's speed, displacement and metacentric radius.

Folding fin anti-roll stabilizers (SAFIR) or non-folding fin anti-roll stabilizers (SAFARI) use the thrust normally generated on a hydrodynamic fin moving through the water at high speed. The skew of the fin is controlled to create a stabilizing torque to balance out the torque of the swell. To increase fin thrust, theoretical studies and wet dock tests have been performed to define a new, exclusive fin profile called the ALPHA FIN that significantly improves stabilizer performance and reduces operating and maintenance costs.

Active tank anti-roll stabilizers (SARA) use the torque created by the displacement caused by a volume of liquid inside a saddle tank on the ship to balance the torque of the swell.

These installations are operated by complex real time control/command devices. They can be produced in different versions for both civil and military vessels.
